Build a business on sustainable foundations
The scramble to be seen, followed and liked on social media is a source of dread and angst for many. It’s a big barrier to several highly sensitive (HSP) women I’ve talked with who want to have their own business. But it is possible, and I’d argue preferable, to not use major social media outlets to operate your heart-forward company of one. We all know the algorithm game. It makes a great analogy for how we can tune to our inner compass -our own inner algorithm - to guide and grow our business.
An algorithm is a set of instructions or rules designed to perform a task or solve a problem. It can be used to process, calculate and automate.
Just as algorithms are programmed to optimize certain outcomes based on external inputs, you can create your own inner algorithm to guide decisions more authentically and intentionally. By framing your inner wisdom as an algorithm, it gives structure to the intuitive process, encouraging mindfulness, self-reflection, and discernment at each step.

Framing your inner wisdom as an algorithm, gives structure to the intuitive process, encouraging mindfulness, self-reflection, and discernment at each step.
Let’s look at the process and how to shift from chasing online algorithms (especially social platforms) to following your inner algorithm.
1. Input (Self-Awareness vs. External Metrics)
An algorithm starts with the input of data. Social media algorithms focus on metrics such as likes, shares, engagement, and follower counts, often leading someone to make decisions based on what performs well in the digital space.
Instead of relying on these external metrics, you can prioritize internal data—such as how you feel about your work, the alignment of your offerings with your values, and the impact on your mental well-being. This shift places value on inner clarity over external validation.
Becoming aware of your emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations is where you gather the "data" of your internal experience.
2. Processing (Reflection vs. Reactivity)
Social media algorithms often encourage fast-paced, reactive decision-making. You may feel pressure to post more or adjust content to trends in hopes of better engagement.
By processing decisions through reflection—whether through journaling, meditation, or simply taking quiet time - you can stay connected to your deeper motivations. This step allows you to reflect on what truly resonates with your purpose and audience, instead of what’s trending in the moment.
In this step, you take time to reflect on the information. You might ask yourself questions like, "What am I truly feeling?" or "What does my intuition tell me about this situation?" It's about quieting external noise and processing what your inner self is communicating.
3. Filtering (Discernment vs. Trends)
Social media algorithms filter content to push what's popular, which can encourage copying others or chasing trends that might not align with your values or audience.
With an internal filter, you can discern between what’s “shiny” but irrelevant and what feels genuinely aligned with your personal and business goals. This filter helps you weed out distractions and trends that don’t serve your higher vision.
Much like algorithms filter out irrelevant data, here you sift through your inner responses to distinguish between fear, conditioning, or anxiety versus genuine inner wisdom. Meditation, journaling, or simply pausing to check in can help with this step.
4. Decision-Making (Action Based on Intuition)
Algorithm actions are often guided by performance data—what gets the most engagement. This can result in a disconnect between you and your true voice or mission.
|”Decisions made from the inner algorithm honor intuition, creativity, and connection.”
Instead of asking, "What will get the most likes?" ask, "What feels true to me?" or, "What will serve my audience in a meaningful way?" The focus shifts to delivering value and building authentic relationships.
Trust your insights and take action. This is where you allow your inner wisdom to guide your choices, much like how an algorithm gives a clear output after processing data.
5. Feedback (Authenticity vs. Metrics)
With social media algorithms, feedback is immediate and quantitative—more likes, more views. It creates a feedback loop that prioritizes visibility over authenticity.
Your inner algorithm feedback comes from reflection on how actions align with one's values, how much joy or fulfillment you feel, and the quality of engagement with your audience. It allows for course corrections based on emotional and spiritual growth, not just numbers.
6. Long-Term Growth (Sustainable Success vs. Viral Moments)
Social media algorithms prioritize short-term gains, often pushing content that gets immediate engagement but doesn't necessarily contribute to long-term growth or fulfillment.
Aligned with your inner algorithm you build a business on sustainable, meaningful foundations by consistently tuning into your inner wisdom. Success comes from alignment, authenticity, and gradual growth rather than chasing fleeting viral moments.
Relying on social media algorithms may leave you feeling exhausted trying to keep up with trends or constantly pushing content that doesn't feel genuine.
By using your inner algorithm, you instead focus on activities that bring fulfillment and resonance with your mission—whether that means writing a deeply personal blog, connecting with your ideal clients through authentic engagement, or creating offers that feel inspired from within, rather than driven by external pressures.
Rather than letting external social media algorithms dictate your business strategy,

It empowers you to stay aligned with your inner compass, focusing on long-term fulfillment and values-driven success.
